Weight Management Is A Lifestyle - Your Lifestyle
By K. Clifford

Weight management to health professionals, basically means maintaining a healthy body weight. For people who are looking to lose weight, and also those who have problems keeping weight on, weight management is a key issue. Most people with weight management issues, encounter the first problem - trying to lose weight. I won't lie to you, it does take some work, and I'll itemize the 3 key things that you need to take control of to lose fat and manage your weight.

1. Weight Management is a Lifestyle

I don't care what the latest crash diet craze tells you, the fact is nothing that is worth the trouble is a quick fix and then it's over. Think about it. You always hear that relationships are a lot of work, right? Why is that? It's because you and your partner are getting to know each other each day, and growing and it's sometimes a struggle to grow together. It's the same concept when you're attempting weight management. You've made the decision to get healthy and some days are hard because you're testing yourself and getting to know your own limits and by continuing, you're growing. The good news is, as with any great relationship, weight management gets easier with time.

2. You Need to Exercise

Many people often procrastinate about working out, making New Years resolution after New Years resolution only to see the pounds add on. Yes, a change in mindset is vital and it's the beginning of this journey. Remember weight management is about keeping your body at a stable and healthy weight without too much fluctuation. The next step is to exercise. I'm not saying that you should go sign up for the next marathon if you've never worked out before. In fact, I'm saying the opposite. Many people think they need to run and get fit in order to join a gym. Actually, you should be at least somewhat fit in order to run. But let's take running out of the equation for now. What you should really be focusing on is resistance or strength training. Before you start complaining, remember point 1 above: the mindset. Some of the benefits of resistance training are: the prevention of disease (such as osteoporosis) and ailments, slowing of the aging process, improvement of posture and balance, and last but not least, fat burning and weight management. One caveat - I don't want you to just run out and start lifting weights that are too heavy for you (too heavy means that you can't do the exercise without compromising the correct form). It's a fine line that a personal trainer can help with.

3. Change your Eating Habits

A challenge that some experience is after losing weight, people fall back into old eating patterns and regain the weight. The key here is to make eating healthy a permanent lifestyle. Don't fall into the trap of thinking eating healthy means boring and tasteless. There are so many healthy alternatives you can enjoy. In staying fit and keeping your body at a healthy weight, you need to be attentive to the foods and drinks which you intake. Some of the foods and drinks you should try to avoid are those high in sugars like carbonated drinks (sodas). Also processed foods that have a lot of sodium and trans fats are extremely unhealthy. Also, try eating higher fiber foods like whole grain bread. The trick with fiber is that is helps regulate the digestive system and helps you feel full longer, so you fight those cravings. Also, drink lots of water and minimize or eliminate alcohol totally from your diet. Even a low-calorie alcoholic drink can cause you to feel its effects up to a week after consumption.

Maintaining body weight is all about the equilibrium between diet and regular exercise. Once you begin to maintain your healthy eating plan alongside your work out regimen your weight management should fall into place. But if you need the help of a professional, don't be ashamed or afraid. By all means, check out your local fitness centers. Some of them offer programs with both the exercise and nutritional elements in a way that you don't have to change your entire lifestyle all at once. That way, you're taking gradual, permanent steps toward your weight management goals.
