Losing Weight After Menopause - How to Have Healthy Weight Loss After Menopause
By Jeremy Hickling

Losing weight after menopause can be challenging for many women. Your body has undergone a powerful transformation - one that it hasn't experienced since puberty some years before. Right on the heels of this experience can be an uncomfortable increase in fat and body weight.

My wife say's 'Menopause is.' This is to say that like 'life' there is death and taxes and...menopause. So with that firm footing of acceptance let's look at how to lose weight after menopause but first, what's happening during this phase of your life?

During menopause your body begins to quit producing hormones that have been flowing for years. The symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings...and of course weight gain. And a lot more.

Your body has less a requirement for the following hormones as you age:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • Androgen
  • Testosterone

When there is a drop in the level of these hormones your body will begin change for example, a drop in estrogen means your body will seek out other sources of this chemical and actually promote converting calories to fat because they are a source of Estrogen.

A drop in Progesterone levels will lead to sodium retention thus water retention and water weight gain - which isn't truly weight gain but uncomfortable none the less.

Jan, my wife, didn't care that gaining water weight wasn't true weight gain. I understand.

Less Testosterone means a loss in lean muscle and unfortunately a lowering of your metabolism. The natural furnace for 'fat burn.'

Lose weight and stay healthy during and after menopause.

The good news here is this phase of your life will pass. The menopause period can last up to a year or longer but you can create conditions during and after menopause where by your body will restore itself to its original weight and you can even lose weight naturally during this time.

Regardless of the situation your body wants to maintain a healthy natural balance. In fact being overweight and or obese is not a natural condition.

The epidemic of obesity in our culture is a result of lifestyle choices and so by making different choices you can create the conditions that lead to fast and natural weight loss even during and after menopause.

The 3 pillars for healthy body weight.

Losing weight for anyone requires effort but it does not mean hellish exercise programs, pills and potions, restricting your diet, etc.

None of that will help you lose weight and keep it off. I'll bet you already know this by now.

Women typically accumulate more fat during menopause and struggle to get rid of it and rather than resigning yourself to the belief that 'this will never change', here's a direct intervention that will STOP fat accumulation and BURN fat naturally.

1) Choose Low Glycemic foods to eat. Here's a hint: 90% of your local grocery store is full of processed food that is unhealthy for you. These foods spike your blood sugar often several times a day and this leads to Insulin resistance and carbohydrate addiction - food cravings.

2) Take high quality nutritional supplementation. Our environments are more toxic than ever before. If you aren't consuming organic fruits, which you should be at least 4-6 times a day, you are ingesting anywhere from 47 to 67 different kinds of pesticides with each piece of fruit!

Pesticides kills things. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

3) Exercise moderately. This is easy, really. Your body was designed to move. Go for a walk 5-6 times a week for at least an hour. (Turn off the TV.) When your body gets exercise it stays strong and all the joints get the use they need to keep going. The motion of walking and exercising assists with peristalsis and digestion and natural weight loss.

Remember that being fat and overweight is not normal and so unless you have a medical condition that prevents you from losing weight normally then you can achieve your ideal weight and stay there! Check out more great information on how to really lose weight during menopause!
