Understanding Body Fat Percentage - Crucial to Developing a Well Rounded Weight Loss Program
By Arturo Ramirez

When going on a diet, it is important to note the difference between weight loss and fat loss. While the two are used interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing.

Understanding body fat percentage will better assist in developing a well rounded weight loss program.

In order to be successful with your weight loss goals, it is important to be able to differentiate between the two. Simple research and preparation will help you avoid many mistakes dieters make before embarking on their new lifestyle!

Weight loss is the loss of body mass by means of fluids, fat, and or muscle tissue.

The simple fact that weight is being lost does not translate to fat loss taking place.

Fat loss is the process in which fat cell reduction takes place. This process is accomplished both by reducing overall fat calories and by shrinking them through diet and exercise.

So the question remains: how is body fat percentage determined. The easiest way to accomplish this, is by calculating the individuals BMI or body mass index.

Keep in mind that the BMI is only a rough estimate of body fat percentage in the body. Many outside factors can and do affect the accuracy of BMI testing.

BMI should not be used to on teenagers and individuals with large amounts of muscle mass.

The most accurate way to measure fat is through Hydrostatic Weighing. In simple terms it is the process of being weighed under water.

Understanding body fat percentage can help create a well developed weight loss plan.

Body fat percentage for men should fall between 15%-18%.

Women on the other hand should keep it between 22%-25%.
